Artist Spotlight: How Mayjay’s Afrofusion Sound Is Taking Over

Every now and then, an artist emerges with a sound so distinct, it demands attention. Enter Mayjay, born Vincent Nnamdi Adolphus, a rising Afrofusion star blending the rich melodies of Afrobeat with the rhythmic essence of Jamaican music. Born on July 9, 1993, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Mayjay’s musical identity is shaped by his roots in Mbeke, Isi-ala Mbano, Imo State, and a childhood spent surrounded by music.   Y

His journey began at Maybloom Primary School, continued through “Benviatto High School”, and later led him to Rivers State University, where he earned a degree in Hotel Catering and Management. But while hospitality might have been his field of study, music was always his calling. Drawing inspiration from industry heavyweights like Chris Brown, Wizkid, Ty Dolla Sign, and Kranium, Mayjay started his professional music career in the 2010s, crafting a unique blend of Afrobeats and Dancehall that caters to both local and international audiences.

In August 2021, he released his debut EP, “4:19”—a nine-track project that put his artistry on full display. With collaborations featuring Boybreed, Maqdaveed, Magnito, and Minz, the project showcased his ability to navigate multiple soundscapes with ease. Fast forward to December 2024, and Mayjay returned with “Holiday”, a track that effortlessly merges Afropop and Dancehall vibes. Produced by Freshy, the song tells the story of a young woman dreaming of luxury and adventure, capturing the carefree spirit of wanderlust in a beat-driven, melodic anthem.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The independent music scene is bursting with talent, but as we all know, it only takes one song to flip the script”, one moment to turn an emerging artist into a household name. And right now, Mayjay is standing at that crossroads. With “Holiday” climbing the charts daily, it’s safe to say his takeoff isn’t a matter of *if*, it’s *when*. So buckle up, because the next flight out of Afrofusion Airport might just have “Mayjay” as the pilot.
