Part 1 – The Pioneers
PLANTASHUN BOIZ (2000-2003)
The Members:
- 2Baba (2Face Idibia) – The Superstar
- Blackface Naija – The Bitter One
- Faze – The Neutral One
What Happened:
- Split in 2003 after “three captains in one ship” problem
- 2Baba became international star with “African Queen” (2004)
- Blackface’s solo career flopped completely
- Faze had moderate success but never reached 2Baba’s heights
The Dark Side:
- Blackface has accused 2Baba of stealing “African Queen” since 2015
- Released “The Return” album (January 2025) as Plantashun Boiz without 2Baba
- 2Baba refused to participate, now semi-retired at festivals
- Faze stuck in the middle, features with both but performs more with 2Baba
THE REMEDIES (1997-2002)
The Members:
- Eedris Abdulkareem – The Controversial One
- Tony Tetuila – The Forgotten Pioneer
- Eddy Remedy – The Failed One
What Happened:
- Pioneered Nigerian hip-hop with hit “Shakomo”
- All three claim THEY formed the group and invited the others
- Split around 2002, each went solo
The Dark Side:
- Eedris called “one of the most useless artists in Nigeria” despite “Jaga Jaga” success
- Tony Tetuila (net worth $1M) complains new artists “too proud” to work with veterans
- Eddy Remedy relocated to USA, career completely flopped, calls Eedris “a cheat”
- All accuse each other of lying about group formation (February 2024)
STYL-PLUS (2003-2006)
The Members:
- Original: Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi, Lanre Faneyi (died 1998)
- Current: Shifi Emoefe & Zeal Onyecheme
What Happened:
- Started as gospel quartet STYL in Akure (1997)
- Massive breakthrough with “Olufunmi” and “Runaway” (2003)
- Debut album “Expressions” (2006) dominated Nigerian R&B
- Even released “Four Years” about staying together while other groups broke up
The Dark Side:
- Only first album made real impact—second album barely felt
- “Olufunmi” remains bigger than anything they’ll ever make again
- Stuck performing nostalgia hits at throwback events
- Tunde left, went solo as “Tunde Tdot”—moderate success with “African Lady”
- Now managing copyrights and recovering lost royalties through Ordior
- One-hit-wonder syndrome: trapped in their past glory
P-SQUARE (2005-2016)
The Members:
- Peter Okoye (Mr P)
- Paul Okoye (Rudeboy)
What Happened:
- Twin brothers from Jos became Africa’s biggest duo
- Hits: “Bizzy Body,” “Do Me,” “Personally,” “Chop My Money”
- Split 2016, reunited 2021-2022, split AGAIN
The Dark Side:
- Together = unstoppable. Apart = ordinary
- Family feud with manager/brother Jude Okoye
- Teased album May 2023—never happened
- Ego destroyed Africa’s greatest musical duo
- Ranked #6 combined in 2025—shadows of former glory
THE PATTERN: Success → Ego → Accusations → Bitter Splits → Faded Careers
Next in series: Mid-2000s generation and what destroyed their momentum
